The artwork displays calligraphy that reads (right to left):

  • Subhanallah – سُبْحَانَ ٱللَّهِ - Glory be to Allah
  • Alhamdulillah – اَلْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ - Praise and Gratitude be to Allah
  • Allahu Akbar – ٱللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ - God is the Greatest

The artwork features three panels of Arabic calligraphy on black matt paper, each framed in a black-bordered rectangular frame. The calligraphy is done with gold and silver metallic pens. The calligraphy is written in an elegant gold style against a deep black background, creating a striking contrast. The intricate details and flowing script add to the piece's visual appeal. Each of the three sections contains different Arabic phrases. The lower portions of the panels are adorned with delicate golden dots, giving the impression of embellishments or decorative elements that enhance the overall aesthetic.

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
"The most beloved words to Allah are four: Subhanallah, Alhamdulillah, La ilaha illallah, and Allahu Akbar. It does not matter with which of them you begin." (Sahih Muslim, Hadith 3469). This hadith acknowledges that these four powerful phrases are beloved to Allah.  They are described as expressions of praise, glorification, and acknowledgement of the greatness of Allah.

About the Artists

Muhammad Waqas and Sameera are self-taught artists. Their journey became more dedicated in 2019 when friends began commissioning their work. Since then, they have exhibited across New Zealand, including at the country's Parliament House, where their painting “51 – Love, Peace & Unity” received national recognition in 2020. They also collaborated with the New Zealand Post to create the first-ever Islamic representation on collectable stamps and served as Muslim artist ambassadors for Lake House Art Centre in 2023. Additionally, they worked with Ruth Robertson-Taylor on the mural Weaving Hope.

Their work focuses on Arabic calligraphy, a form of remembrance and reflection. This ancient art blends tradition with modern elements such as fluid movements, balanced compositions, vivid colours, and abstract backgrounds. Inspired by the rich history and significance of Arabic, they create unique and meaningful pieces by merging traditional calligraphy with contemporary techniques.
